Getting kids to go outside and do some exercise can be a challenge. As a parent, we can all say that getting our children to get some exercise in is tough. However, lately I’ve been cracking the code on how to motivate them to get up and get some exercise in.

Here’s what you have to understand: kids do stuff because it sparks their curiosity and it is fun for them. Why do kids play with blocks? It sparks their curiosity and it is fun. So keeping that in mind, we simply have to reframe exercise.

So here are some ways you can get your kids outside and get some exercise in:

1. Play Tag

I remember that when I was a kid, I loved to play tag with my friends. Sometimes we’d go for hours and hours. It was fun. We’d go to the local playground and play variations of tag.

It’s easy to tell your kids to play a game of tag. It’s much harder to tell them to go run a mile.

So contact some of your friends and let them know that your kids are going to have a day where they go play tag at the local playground and they can bring their kids as well. The more kids that come out, the better. The kids will have more fun.

2. Obstacle Course

For some reason, obstacle courses are really fun. Maybe it’s the variety that makes it fun? Who knows. The bottom line is that obstacle courses are fun.

You can easily create a simple obstacle course that works the entire body.

Once the obstacle course is built, you can tell your kids to invite some of their friends and they can have races to see who can go through the obstacle course the fastest.

3. Cops and Robbers

This is one of the most fun games I played as a kid. If there’s one game that made me run a lot, it was this one. Not only does it work your body, but also your mind. You have to hide and make sure you don’t get caught.

As a kid, the playground would be the entire subdivision. With such a large ground, we would run very long distances while also having a lot of fun.

4. Water Gun Fights

If it’s a hot summer day, this one is the best. Hand your child a big water gun that weighs a good bit. You’ll work their muscles and let them run around.

It makes a fun game when they can shoot their friends with water. That’s pretty fun, especially on a hot summer day.

5. AR Games

You can use technology to your advantage. Games like Pokemon Go encourage children to run around to hatch eggs from which they can get rare Pokemon.

There are also other games where you must run to “run away from zombies” and if you don’t run, you won’t survive.

Technology isn’t all that bad. You just have to get creative and have some fun.


Making kids get up and get some exercise can either be hard or easy. It just depends on how you approach the situation. These were just 5 ways. There are many more ways. You just have to make it fun and a child will most likely want to do it.

Sometimes as a parent, we just have to have an open mind and look at it from a different perspective. That’s how to make exercise fun for kids.
